"Appointed for men..."

Text: Hebrews 5:1

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AARONIC HIGH PRIESTHOOD

What was the significance of the Aaronic priesthood? The following text hints at the work of the Aaronic priesthood. Let us ponder the following text.

“For every high priest taken from among men
is appointed for men…”
Hebrews 5:1a

Let us ponder the following thoughts that made for a significant Aaronic priesthood:-

1. For glory and beauty

The garments of the high priest were meant to reflect two features:-

a) The glory of the ministry
b) The beauty of the ministry

The high priest must always bear in mind the dignity and the privilege that belonged to the high priesthood!

2. Memorial Stones

a) Responsibility

The high priest was to bear in mind that he had a special responsibility entrusted to him. He must be deeply concerned about the spiritual well-being of all the tribes of Israel. That was no small task.

b) Intercession

The Memorial Stones were placed on the high priest so that he might represent the nation as he prayed to God.

3. The Head Gear

The head gear was very elaborate. The most significant part of the head gear was the words engraved on a plate: “HOLINESS TO THE LORD”. The following thoughts were to be borne in mind:-

a) A solemn reminder of the office of the high priest.
b) A vital reminder that he was approaching a Holy God.
c) A strong reminder that his ministry was most holy.
d) A personal reminder that he must strive to have a life of personal holiness.
