Day 120

"In the days of His flesh..."

Text: Hebrews 5:7

THE PRAYER LIFE OF JESUS

There is no question as to the fact that Jesus maintained a very strong prayer-life.

1. Beginning His public ministry in prayer (in the wilderness) (Cf. Matthew 4:1-11)

2. Beginning the day in prayer (Cf. Mark 1:35)

3. Maintaining a life of prayer (Cf. Luke 5:16)

4. Agonising in prayer (Cf. Matthew 26:36-46)

5. Intercessory prayer (Cf. John 17)

THE PRIESTLY PRAYER MINISTRY OF JESUS

The ministry of prayer sustained by Jesus takes on an even deeper significance when read in the light of the following text.

“Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up
prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears
to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard
because of His godly fear.”
Hebrews 5:7

1. Who, in the days of His flesh

a) Grammatical connection must be noted.
b) “Who” (“hos”) connects the prayers of Jesus (Hebrews 5:7) with His being “a priest” (Hebrews 5:6)

2. Jesus began His High Priestly ministry (in prayer) “in the days of His flesh”

3. The order of Melchizedek distinguished from the existing order

a) The existing order of the high priest was Aaronic.
b) Jesus would have to be born from the tribe of Levi to qualify to be a priest.
c) He would have to be born into the Aaronic family to qualify to be in line for high priest.
d) Jesus was from the line of David, who was from the tribe of Judah.
e) Jesus could become High Priest “in the days of His flesh” only if He belonged to the order of Melchizedek.
