"Let us go on to perfection..."

Text: Hebrews 6:1

PRESSING ON TO SPIRITUAL PERFECTION

The author used a very strong word to describe the goal that every believer should have.

“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles
of Christ, let us go on to perfection…”
Hebrews 6:1

The word “perfection” (“teleioteta”)

a) What this word does not mean
i) It does not mean “sinless perfection”.
ii) It does not mean that we would never sin again.
b) What this word means lexically
i) It is a word that describes a person who has arrived at full maturity.
ii) This word is often used to describe a child growing to full adulthood.
c) What this word means spiritually
i) The believer has established his spiritual foundations (doctrines).
ii) He has gone beyond a diet of only milk.
iii) He is able to partake of solid meat.
iv) He has had his spiritual senses exercised again and again.
v) He has grown well and is now of “full age”.

TWO VITAL THINGS TO DO

There are two things the believer must do if he is to succeed in his quest for “perfection”.

1. He must leave the discussion of elementary principles.

2. He must press on towards achieving “perfection” (that is “full maturity”).

All too often the believer is tempted to allow complacency to set in, when he should be ever seeking to surge forward, moving towards spiritual maturity!
