"The ark of the covenant..."

Text: Hebrews 9:4b

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

Perhaps the most important article in the entire Tabernacle would be “The Ark of the Covenant”. The following text must be studied most carefully.

“The ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold,
in which were the golden pot that had the manna,
Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.”
Hebrews 9:4

1. The external features of the Ark of the Covenant (also called “The Ark of the Testimony” Exodus 25:22)

a) Overlaid with gold on all sides.
b) Its Significance is obvious!
i) The covenant (Mosaic) was precious.
ii) It must be well protected.
iii) It must be preserved.
2. The Contents of the Ark of the Covenant
i) The two tablets of stone God gave to Moses (Cf. Exodus 25:21).
ii) The golden pot that contained manna (Cf. Exodus 16: 32-36).
iii) The rod of Aaron (Cf. Numbers 17:1-10).

3. The symbolic meaning behind each object

a) A deep theological meaning.
b) A special historical meaning.
i) The tablets of stone- to commemorate God giving the Laws of the Covenant.
ii) The manna- to commemorate God’s marvelous provision for Israel.
iii) The rod of Aaron- to commemorate the day God defended the high priestly ministry of Aaron.
