"The cherubim of glory..."

Text: Hebrews 9:5

THE CHERUBIM OF GLORY

The Ark of the Covenant had a special feature placed on top of it. This was noted by the author of Hebrews.

“And above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing
the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.”
Hebrews 9:5

1. The Cherubim

a) This is an order of angelic beings.
b) They are powerful angels that attend the throne of God.
c) The word “cherubim” signifies plurality (The ending “im” is one of the ways in which the Hebrew language denotes plurality).

2. The cherubim of glory

a) They have a glory given to them as angels of God.
b) Their glory reflected God’s own greater glory.

3. The “mercy seat”

a) This represents the place of prayer where man brings his petition to God.
b) The operative word to remember when we pray is “mercy”.
c) Prayer is always a most humbling experience where we have to plead for the Lord’s mercy to be extended to us.

OF THESE THINGS WE CANNOT SPEAK IN DETAIL

The author of Hebrews has discussed none of the Tabernacle features in any detail. What were some of the reasons why these were not discussed in detail?

1. The Tabernacle had served an important function in the past and may be remembered fondly.

2. However it must be remembered that the Tabernacle worship was now “obsolete” (Cf. Hebrews 8:13).

3. The deliberate choice not to speak of Tabernacle worship in detail was thus obvious.
