"Ephraim shall receive shame"

Text: Hosea 10:6

THE ASSYRIAN INVASION

The day was drawing nearer to the time of the Assyrian invasion. Israel had gone too far. It had not repented of its many sins. The doom of the nation would soon come.

“The idol also shall be carried to Assyria
As a present for King Jareb.
Ephraim shall receive shame,
And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.”
Hosea 10:6

1. “The idol also shall be carried to Assyria as a present for King Jareb”

a) This text speaks of the conquest of Israel.
b) Assyria would destroy Israel and all that it stood for.
c) The idol
i) The golden calf would be carried to Assyria.
ii) Because it was made of gold, it would be a fitting present.
iii) King Jareb simply means, “Great king”.
d) The idol was not a deity after all.
i) It would become booty for the conquering Assyrians.
ii) The idol would be carted to Assyria as one of many presents for the Assyrian King.

2. “Ephraim shall receive shame”

a) Bethel, Samaria and Beth Aven were all located in Ephraim.
b) These places were once the pride of Ephraim.
c) These were central places of worship.
d) With the capture of the idol there was nothing left to feel but shame.
e) The idol that they had worshiped with such devotion could not save them.

3. “And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel”

a) Israel had not heeded God’s counsel:
i) The written Scriptures.
ii) The many prophets that God had sent to the nation.
iii) Every bit of counsel had been rejected.
b) Israel heeded its own counsel:
i) The counsel of their own heart.
ii) The counsel of false prophets and priests. They heeded these false counsels to their own shame.
