Day 144

"I will again make you dwell in tents"

Text: Hosea 12:9

THE CURE FOR ARROGANCE

Arrogance is difficult to cure. Pride in the heart cannot be reasoned away. God’s answer was to let Israel return to the days when its people lived in tents.

“But I am the LORD your God,
Ever since the land of Egypt;
I will again make you dwell in tents,
As in the days of the appointed feast.”
Hosea 12:9

1. “I am the LORD your God”

a) Israel had forgotten who God was.
b) This was a needed reminder.
i) He was the LORD.
ii) He was their God.
iii) Israel had made no mention of the LORD when it thought about its riches!

2. “Ever since the land of Egypt”

a) It was the LORD who delivered them from bondage in Egypt.
b) It was God who had brought them into the land of Canaan.
c) It was the LORD their God who gave them the power to gain wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18).

3. “I will again make you dwell in tents”

a) Living in tents was experienced by Israel for forty years in the Wilderness.
b) They would not be able to enjoy the following:
i) Trade
ii) Wealth
iii) Security

4. “As in the days of the appointed feast”

a) This would be a reference to the Feast of Tabernacles.
b) This was celebrated by Israel to remember the past years of living in tents.
i) The people would dwell on the roof-tops under make-shift tents.
ii) They would remember the Lord’s gracious protection.
iii) They would remember with gratitude how the Lord had provided for them.
iv) There would be no room for arrogance.
v) There would be a special desire in the heart to rejoice in the Lord for His goodness shown.
