"The days of punishment have come"

Text: Hosea 9:7

THE DAY OF RECOMPENSE

Israel had ignored all the words of warning from the LORD. Prophet after prophet was sent with a similar message in the hope of responding humbly. There came a time when the inevitable had to take place.

“The days of punishment have come;
The days of recompense have come.
Israel knows!
The prophet is a fool,
The spiritual man is insane,
Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity.”
Hosea 9:7

1. The day of the LORD

a) This was in mind. This dreaded day had finally arrived.

b) It was described in two ways:

i) The days of punishment

ii) The days of recompense

2. “Israel knows”

a) This word of warning had been sounded out by so many prophets (Isaiah, Micah, Hosea).

b) There was no way in which Israel could have pretended ignorance.

c) The day of the LORD was common knowledge.

3. “The prophet is a fool”

a) The prophet who could not see this was indeed a fool.

b) The signs of the day of the Lord were so clear.

4. “The spiritual man is insane”

a) There were those who claimed that they were spiritual.

b) But the reality was that so-called spiritual men were like insane people.

i) They did not forewarn people of the day of judgment.

ii) They lived as if things were fine and God was with them.

iii) This kind of mindset was truly “insane!”

5. “Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity”

a) Two reasons were highlighted:

i) Greatness of iniquity was found and could not be denied.

ii) Enmity with God was obvious.

b) These two problems unresolved would lead to the doom and destruction of Israel.
