Day 193

"He will speak to this people"

Text: Isaiah 28:11

LEARNING THE WORD OF GOD

Judah was conquered by Babylon. The Jews were exiled to Babylon. They would have to begin a new life there. They would also have to learn a new language. They would have to learn how to speak, read and write Babylonian. It would not be an easy task!

“For with stammering lips and another tongue
He will speak to this people,
To whom He said, ‘This is the rest with which
You may cause the weary to rest,’
And, ‘This is the refreshing’;
Yet they would not hear.
But the word of the LORD was to them,
‘Precept upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little,’
That they might go and fall backward, and be broken
And snared and caught.”
Isaiah 28:11-13

1. Learning a new language.

a) One often stammers when learning a new language.

b) Learning a new language was compared to learning about God.

c) The LORD was using the Exile experience to teach Israel about Himself.

2. Past Lessons that were not learned.

a) Resting in the LORD.

b) Being Refreshed by the LORD.

c) But the people had refused to hear the voice of God
speaking through the prophets.

3. The work of the teachers God had sent to those who were in exile.

a) They were teaching these basic lessons:

i) Relating to God by faith.

ii) Resting in God through faith.

iii) Being Refreshed by God as He heard and answered their prayers.

b) But the work was slow-going.

“Precept upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little.”
Isaiah 28:13

c) Failure was also anticipated.

i) There would be some who would go backward and fall.

ii) Others would be ensnared.

iii) Still others would be broken.

d) Life without faith in the LORD was that much harder!
