"A path through the mighty waters"

Text: Isaiah 43:16

THE GREATNESS OF GOD

One of the problems Israel had, was the inability to fathom the greatness of God. Israel admired nations and people who demonstrated power and knowledge. But Israel could not appreciate God’s far greater knowledge and power!

“Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea
And a path through the mighty waters,
Who brings forth the chariot and horse,
The army and the power
(They shall lie down together, they shall not rise;
They are extinguished, they are quenched like a wick).”
Isaiah 43:16-17

1. Great naval power.

a) Phoenicia excelled nautically in the ancient days.

i) They were able to build great ships.

ii) They had wise and experienced mariners.

b) The Babylonians overtook the Phoenecians.

i) They became the masters of the sea.

ii) Their naval fleets were second to none.

2. God’s greater power.

a) The LORD declared His power over the mighty seas.

b) What He can do:

i) To make a way in the sea.

ii) To make a path in the mighty waters.

iii) God’s power far exceeded that of the Phoenicians and Babylonians.

3. God’s conquest of mighty armies.

a) Many countries took pride in:

i) Their horses and chariots.

ii) Their army.

b) But God can quench them as easily as a wick that can be extinguished.

c) He can defeat the mightiest of armies.

i) They will be made to lie down on the ground in defeat.

ii) They will not be able to arise anymore if God so willed it.
