"I was angry with My people"

Text: Isaiah 47:6

TWO PERSPECTIVES TO BE BORNE IN MIND

Two perspectives are to be borne in mind as we read this text. They are to be understood carefully.

“I was angry with My people;
I have profaned My inheritance,
And given them into your hand.
You showed them no mercy;
On the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily.
And you said, ‘I shall be a lady forever,’
So that you did not take these things to heart,
Nor remember the latter end of them.”
Isaiah 47:6-7

1. The LORD’s perspective.

a) He was angry with His people:

i) For their idolatry.

ii) For their sinfulness.

iii) For their obstinacy.

b) He profaned His inheritance.

i) This is a reference to the land of Israel.

ii) The land was given to Israel as an inheritance.

iii) It was profaned when the Babylonians ransacked the land.

iv) The LORD gave the land to the Babylonians.

2. The deeds of the Babylonians when they captured Judah.

a) They were merciless to the people in Judah.

b) They laid heavy yokes, even on the elderly.

c) Such merciless acts were uncalled for!

3. The attitude of the Babylonians.

a) They said to themselves, “I shall be a lady forever”.

b) What this phrase meant.

i) She was indifferent to the sufferings of their captives.

ii) She was callous and haughty towards others.

iii) She was self-centered in her ways.

c) She did take to heart the sufferings that had to be endured by people.

d) She did not show any care or concern as to the consequences inflicted on the prisoners.

e) The LORD held them accountable for their wicked deeds.
