"Surely He has borne our griefs"

Text: Isaiah 53:4

FEW COMPREHENDED THE MISSION OF THE MESSIAH

Few fully understood what the Messiah had come to do. Many were unable to comprehend all that He would have to suffer in order to fulfil God’s plan of salvation.

“Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.”
Isaiah 53:4

1. “Surely”

a) The Mission of the Messiah was prophesied.

b) His work was revealed to the prophets.

c) But few others understood what He was sent to do.

2. He bore the griefs of many.

a) He grieved with the poor.

b) He felt for the hopeless and helpless.

c) He bore their griefs.

3. He carried the sorrows of many.

a) There were those who suffered death.

b) Bereaved families sorrowed dreadfully.

c) He carried their sorrows.

4. A poor response.

a) Many mocked what He taught.

b) They could not believe His power over death.

c) They esteemed Him negatively.

5. A brief description of how some regarded the Messiah.

a) That He was struck by God.

b) That He was smitten by the LORD.

c) That He was afflicted by God.

d) Meaning:

i) That He was beside Himself.

ii) That He was deluded.

iii) That He was mad.

6. The problem lay with blind and foolish mankind and not with the Messiah,
the Lord Jesus Christ!
