"The glory of the LORD is risen upon you"

Text: Isaiah 60:1

THE GLORY OF THE LORD

The glory of God is a profound doctrine. The very being of God is full of glory. That glory may be seen in His creation. God’s glory may also be seen in His redemption of Israel.

“Arise, shine;
For your light has come!
And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you.
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the LORD will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
The Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.”
Isaiah 60:1-3

1. The glory of God.

a) Temporarily, the glory of God had left Israel.

b) The sinful nation had to be chastised by the LORD.

c) It would experience humiliation at the hands of the Assyrians and the Babylonians.

d) But in this prophecy, God promised that His glory would return to bless Israel.

e) This aspect of God’s glory was the giving of His light.

f) This was the Light of the world.

g) This was a Messianic prophecy.

2. Deep darkness.

a) This is not a literal darkness.

b) This describes the spiritual that engulfed Israel.

c) We read about this darkness in Matthew 4:18-19.

3. Only Light can dispel darkness.

a) God would send Light.

b) The Light that He would send would be the Lord Jesus Himself.

c) The Light that He would bring would reflect the glory of the LORD.

i) It would be seen in Israel.

ii) His glory would be upon the nation.

4. The Gentiles

a) They were once hostile towards Israel.

b) They would come to the Light.

c) Even kings would come to the brightness of God’s glory seen in that Light.

d) The Light is none other than the Lord Jesus and the gospel that He would proclaim.

e) This was a prophecy that Gentiles would one day come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Light of the world (John 8:12).
