Day 507

"The Spirit of the LORD causes him to rest"

Text: Isaiah 63:14

REMEMBERING BYGONE DAYS

Israel remembered the ancient days when the LORD led the nation through His servant, Moses. Those were the days when the Spirit of God was with Israel.

“‘Who led them by the right hand of Moses,
With His glorious arm,
Dividing the water before them
To make for Himself an everlasting name,
Who led them through the deep,
As a horse in the wilderness,
That they might not stumble?’
As a beast goes down into the valley,
And the Spirit of the LORD causes him to rest,
So You lead Your people,
To make Yourself a glorious name.”
Isaiah 63:12-14

1. Moses

a) He was a special and faithful servant of God.

b) The LORD revealed His power wondrously.

i) The glorious arm of God was displayed.

ii) Moses was the anointed servant of the LORD.

iii) The Red Sea was divided when Israel began their journey to Canaan.

2. The LORD

a) He made for Himself an everlasting name.

b) He was with the children of Israel.

i) He led them through the deep.
This was a reference to the Red Sea crossing.

ii) Through the wilderness, God was there to lead Israel through this perilous journey.

iii) Israel was compared to a horse.
God was there faithfully guiding all the way!

3. As a beast

a) Israel was described candidly here.

b) It was compared to a beast (“horse”).

c) The Spirit of the LORD caused the beast to rest when necessary.

4. The leading of the LORD.

a) God’s leading was necessary.

b) A horse, or any other beast, would not have survived on its own.

c) Through the LORD’s personal involvement, His glorious name is established.

This was a humble and badly needed realisation for Israel! If God were to continue as an enemy to Israel, the nation would perish!
