Day 525

"On this one will I look"

Text: Isaiah 66:2

THE ONE ON WHOM GOD WILL LOOK

The phrase “the elect” was used to describe the Lord’s people. A further word of explanation is given to clarify what it means to be among the blessed elect.

“Thus says the LORD:
‘Heaven is My throne,
And earth is My footstool.
Where is the house that you will build Me?
And where is the place of My rest?
For all those things My hand has made,
And all those things exist,’
Says the LORD.
‘But on this one will I look:
On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit,
And who trembles at My word.'”
Isaiah 66:1-2

1. The majesty of the LORD is to be borne in mind.

a) Heaven is God’s throne.

b) The earth is only the footstool of the LORD.

2. The house of the LORD.

a) Some took pride in the Temple that was built in Jerusalem.

b) The original Temple was built by king Solomon.

c) But its physical glory had utterly faded with the passing of time.

d) Two pertinent questions were raised:

i) Where is God’s house?

ii) Where is the sanctuary, the place of God’s rest?

e) Taking pride in man-made things results in nothing.

2. God’s Power.

a) Man is wiser if he were to remember God and His great power.

b) By His power God made all things that exist.

3. God’s gracious regard.

a) God will regard the person who has a poor and contrite spirit.

b) This person will also tremble when God speaks a word.

c) We are reminded of the first Beatitude.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven”
Matthew 5:3
