Day 59

"Curds and honey everyone will eat who is left in the land"

Text: Isaiah 7:22

WARNING OF POVERTY

Ahaz could not imagine that the nation of Judah could ever become impoverished. King Uzziah, the grandfather of Ahaz had enabled Judah to become a mighty and wealthy nation. Ahaz could not believe in these prophetic words of warning from the LORD.

“It shall be in that day
That a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give,
That he will eat curds;
For curds and honey everyone will eat who is left in the land.”
Isaiah 7:21-22

1. Great wealth

a) This was noted in the way Judah gave burnt offerings (Isaiah 1).

b) The land was full of gold and silver (Isaiah 2).

c) The womenfolk indulged themselves in luxury (Isaiah 3).

2. Great poverty

a) This was forewarned.

b) Basic “wealth” would be reduced to:

i) Keeping alive a young cow.

ii) And two sheep.

3. Sarcasm used

a) That there would be “abundance of milk”.

b) How much milk can a young cow and two sheep produce?

4. The food that many would partake of.

a) Curds and honey would become the staple food.

b) This is a description of great poverty.

5. The phrase “who is left in the land”.

a) Many would be killed in battle.

b) Others would become prisoners and sold as slaves.

c) Those who are fortunate enough to be spared would make up those who are
“left in the land.”

d) They are usually:

i) The very poor

ii) The sick

iii) The aged

This was a humbling word of warning given to Ahaz and to Judah!
