"Written with the finger of God."

Text: Exodus 31:18

GOD AS WRITER

One of the most significant statements in the Book of Exodus may well be this statement.

“And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai,
He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone,
written with the finger of God.”
Exodus 31:18

1. “He… him”

a) “He…” is a reference to the Lord God.
b) “Him…” is a reference to Moses.

2. “Mount Sinai”

a) This locates for us the place where God spoke to Moses.
b) Moses had spent forty days and forty nights in the presence of God.

3. “Forty days and forty nights”

a) It is not without significance that the number of days and nights were mentioned.
b) It is also not without significance that Jesus spent forty days and forty nights in the wilderness.

4. In both instances

a) Communion with God is the focus.
b) The word of God was also a central idea.

5. In the days of Moses

a) God was in the process of giving Moses the two tablets of stone.
b) The Two Stone Tablets were called “The two tablets of the Testimony”.
c) The Person who wrote the Laws was none other than God Himself.

6. In the days of Jesus

a) The word of God was cited as authoritative.
b) By this time, the common phrase to refer to the Word of God was simply “It is written”.
c) Jesus believed and accepted God was indeed the Divine writer even though they may be human writers.

A STRONG CENTRAL IDEA

What stands out as a central idea, in both the oral tradition and in the written mode, God was the Author of the authoritative word of God. This was certainly impressed on Moses as he received the Law from the LORD God Himself. The citation of the Scriptures as the written word confirms the strong and central idea that God was indeed the Divine Author of the Scriptures. Having this central idea will help us cultivate the highest regard for the written word of God.
