Day 36

"Everyone who is perfectly trained..."

Text: Luke 6:40

TEACHING OF THE SCRIPTURES

Jesus was most conscious of the work that God had sent Him to do! He must adhere to the Scriptures and He did just that!

The challenge next was the teaching of the Scriptures. To whom would He teach the Scriptures?

1. The religious establishment in His days

a) They had taught the traditions of the fathers.
b) They had chosen to teach the commandments of men rather than the Scriptures.
c) Jesus had to expose their hypocrisy (Matthew 23).

2. The multitudes

a) They flocked to Jesus.
b) But many came because they wanted to be healed.
c) The word of God largely fell on very poor ground (Matthew 13).

3. The disciples

a) These were invited to follow the Lord Jesus.
b) All of them were untrained in the Scriptures.
c) The goals of the Lord Jesus for them were lofty: –
i) They would become fishers of men.
ii) They would become apostles.
iii) They would become like their Teacher.

A TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE

Jesus summarised what He wanted His disciples to become.

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone
who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.”
Luke 6:40

1. “A disciple is not above his teacher”

a) This is certainly true.
b) Especially when we bear in mind that Jesus is that Teacher.

2. “But everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher”

a) The challenge is to be “perfectly trained”.
b) The disciple must seek to follow his Teacher most diligently.
c) He must deny himself, take up his cross and follow the Lord with great faith (Mark 8:34).
