"Be doers of the word..."

Text: James 1:22

THE WORD OF GOD IN PERSPECTIVE

Thank God for the Scriptures. It is described gloriously in so many ways by different authors of the Bible. The following texts are worth noting: –

A. Psalm 12

1. “The words of the LORD are pure words.” (Psalm 12:6)

2. “You shall keep them, O LORD, You shall preserve them… forever.” (Psalm 12:7)

B. Psalm 19

1. “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul.” (Psalm 19:7a)

2. “The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” (Psalm 19:7b)

3. “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart.” (Psalm 19:8a)

4. “The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.” (Psalm 19:8b)

5. “The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.” (Psalm 19:9b).

C. Psalm 119

1. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

2. “Your law is truth.” (Psalm 119:142b)

AN IMPORTANT EXHORTATION

James, like all the apostles, knew the glorious nature of the Word of God. There is power in the word of God. But mere knowledge of the word of God would not be enough. It had to be received with meekness. It also must be implanted in the heart.

There was one more word to add to this exhortation. There was a practical part.

“But be doers of the word,
and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
James 1:22

1. “But be doers of the word”

a) There were multitudes who heard the Lord Jesus.
b) But only a few actually followed Him as disciples.
c) The call here is obvious:
i) The word of God must be applied in our life.
ii) If we do not obey the word of God mere knowledge would result in nothing.

2. “And not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”

a) The contrast between merely hearing and doing were put side by side for effective contrast.
b) The person who only hears but does not put into practice ends up deceiving himself.
