"If any of you lacks wisdom..."

Text: James 1:5

SEEKING WISDOM

The Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament is devoted to encouraging readers to seek wisdom. There are many gems to be found in Proverbs.

James recognised the need for wisdom in life. He offers excellent practical advice as to how we may seek and find wisdom.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5

1. “If any of you lacks wisdom”

a) The lack of wisdom must first be acknowledged.
b) There must be a desire to seek wisdom.
c) The motivation must be strong to be significant.

2. “Let him ask of God”

a) God is the Source of all wisdom.
b) Prayers must be made to the Lord to grant wisdom.

3. What God is like

a) “Who gives to all liberally”
i) This is a basic understanding of God.
ii) God is not a reluctant Giver; He gives with liberality.
b) “And without reproach”
i) God is not angry or upset when we ask things from Him.
ii) He does not give His blessing with reproach.

4. “And it will be given to him”

a) James wrote with a tremendous sense of certainty.
b) This word must have come from a lifetime of experiencing God’s answers.

REMEMBERING WHAT JESUS TAUGHT

Let us recall one of the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ on the subject of prayer.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds,
and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Matthew 7:7-8
