Jeremiah
"They shall not prevail against you"
Text: Jeremiah 1:19
THE LORD’S PROMISE
Jeremiah was warned that the ministry given to him would be challenging and fraught with danger. There would be some who would be resistant to his ministry. Some would oppose him fiercely. But he may take heart because God would be there right beside him to offer help.
“They will fight against you,
But they shall not prevail against you.
‘For I am with you,’ says the LORD, ‘to deliver you.'”
Jeremiah 1:19
1. “They will fight against you”
a) Jeremiah must be realistic about actual ministry.
b) Not everyone would receive him as a prophet of God.
c) Some will “fight against” him.
i) They will become enemies.
ii) They will resort to all kinds of evil to oppose Jeremiah.
2. “But they shall not prevail against you”
a) This was a wonderful word of encouragement.
b) The enemies will not prevail.
c) Thus, Jeremiah, need not be overly afraid of them.
d) Their plots and schemes would not work out as they planned.
3. “‘For I am with you,’ says the LORD, ‘to deliver you.'”
a) The promise of the Lord’s Presence.
i) This word of promise was given to Moses.
“I will certainly be with you”
Exodus 3:12
ii) It was also given to Joshua.
“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.”
Joshua 1:5
iii) It was now given to Jeremiah as well.
“I am with you.”
Jeremiah 1:16
b) The promise of deliverance.
i) Plots would be hatched against Jeremiah.
ii) These may be unpleasant and even unnerving.
iii) But God would grant deliverance to Jeremiah.
A SUMMARY OF JEREMIAH’S CALL TO THE PROPHETIC MINISTRY
1. A Call was given to Jeremiah directly
a) God had set him apart for the prophetic ministry.
b) This was foreknown and foreordained.
2. Challenges to his ministry
a) These were forewarned.
b) The forewarning was to alert Jeremiah to the problems he would face.
3. Comforting promises were given to the young prophet
a) God would fortify him.
b) The Lord would be with him.
c) Protection and deliverance would be given.
