"Even if Moses and Samuel stood before Me..."

Text: Jeremiah 15:1

INTERCESSORS OF OLD

What was God’s reply to the impassioned pleas of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 14)? God has a solemn response for Jeremiah.

“Then the LORD said to me,
‘Even if Moses and Samuel stood before Me,
My mind would not be favourable toward this people.
Cast them out of My sight and let them go forth.'”
Jeremiah 15:1

1. “Then the LORD said to me”

a) God had heard the prayers of Jeremiah.
b) But He will not give heed to his intercession!
c) Prayer is not to be seen as a means to obtain what we desire.
d) We need to understand God’s will and to submit to it humbly no matter how painful that may be.

2. “Even if Moses and Samuel stood before Me”

a) Two outstanding intercessors were singled out for mention.
b) Moses had a very significant ministry.
i) One major aspect of his ministry was intercession (Exodus 32-34).
ii) God listened and answered the prayers of Moses time and again.
c) Samuel was another outstanding servant of God.
i) He was the last of the Judges.
ii) He was a faithful intercessor and many of his prayers were answered.

3. “My mind would not be favourable toward this people”

a) God’s mind would not be favourable to the children of Judah.
b) Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before God, He would still not heed their prayers of intercession.
c) God would not be favourable to people who had deliberately cast Him aside and then worshipped idols.

4. “Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth”

a) The children of Judah would be cast out of God’s sight (His favour).
b) They would be evicted out of the land God had given to them.
c) The time had come for God’s judgment to be meted out.
