"Where should we go?"

Text: Jeremiah 15:2

EXPECTING QUESTIONS

The Lord knew that there would be questions from the people who listened to Jeremiah’s preaching, even if they did not give heed to his messages. If God would not spare them from war, where would they go from here?

“And it shall be, if they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’
then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the LORD:
‘Such as are for death, to death;
And such as are for the sword, to the sword;
And such as are for the famine, to the famine;
And such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.””
Jeremiah 15:2

1. “And it shall be, if they say to you, ‘Where should we go?'”

a) It seems strange that there would be people asking questions at all.
i) They had shown little interest.
ii) They were certainly not going to obey.
b) The question was almost inevitable. It arose from fear!

2. “Then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the LORD:'”

a) The answer to be given is from the LORD.
b) The people must know that this was Divine judgment.

3. Four possibilities were presented:

a) Death
“Such as are for death, to death”
i) Some would be executed.
ii) Others would die in battle.
b) The sword
“And such as are for the sword, to the sword”
i) The sword represents violence.
ii) It speaks of injury.
c) Famine
“And such as are for the famine, to the famine”
i) War often brings about shortages in food supply.
ii) Some would experience famine more severely than others.
d) Captivity
“And such as are for the captivity, to the captivity”
i) Some would be taken into custody as prisoners of war.
ii) They could be hostages and would experience exile.
