"She has breathed her last"

Text: Jeremiah 15:9

A GLOOMY PICTURE

It was not uncommon to have many children in days gone by. To give birth to many children was considered a great blessing. Mothers somehow found strength to raise up good children.

“‘She languishes who has borne seven;
She has breathed her last;
Her sun has gone down
While it was yet day;
She has been ashamed and confounded.
And the remnant of them I will deliver to the sword
Before their enemies,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 15:9

1. “She languishes who has borne seven”

a) In a fully God-blessed situation:
i) There will be joy.
ii) There will be strength.
b) In a non-blessed situation:
i) The mother of seven feels the stress and strain of motherhood.
ii) She is worn out.

2. “She has breathed her last; her sun has gone down while it was yet day”

a) She draws near to death.
b) Her life was compared to the sun going down.
c) But in fact, it was “yet day”.
i) Her joy was gone.
ii) With it, her strength as well.

3. “She has been ashamed and confounded”

a) She feels shame that she has to die so soon.
b) She is unable to take care of her family.
c) She is confounded by the circumstances of life!
i) The sword
ii) Famine
iii) The absence of God’s blessings.

4. “‘And the remnant of them I will deliver to the sword before their enemies,’ says the LORD”

a) The word “remnant”.
On occasions, this is a reference to the godly that God had preserved.
b) In this particular context:
i) The “remnant” is not a reference to the godly.
ii) It is a general reference to those who survived the war.
iii) But they would not be redeemed.
iv) They would be delivered to the sword before their enemies.

It would fulfil a proverbial saying, “Out of the frying pan and into the fire.”
