"Woe is me, my mother"

Text: Jeremiah 15:10

A DEEP PERSONAL LAMENT

Jeremiah had a heart of great compassion and kindness. He displayed much gentleness of heart in life and ministry. He suffered much as a prophet of the Lord.

“Woe is me, my mother,
That you have borne me,
A man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth!
I have neither lent for interest,
Nor have men lent to me for interest.
Every one of them curses me.”
Jeremiah 15:10

1. “Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me”

a) This is an old idiomatic expression.
b) It describes a deep sense of sadness.
i) He expresses regrets that he was born at all.
ii) Such was the sense of “woe” that was felt.

2. “A man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth”

a) He strove with the unrepentant sinful.
b) He contended with the stubborn and the wicked.
c) Every time he preached, there would be reactions:
i) They would complain.
ii) They would criticize.
iii) They would even condemn.
d) Our times are not far different from that of Jeremiah!

3. “I have neither lent for interest, nor have men lent to me for interest. Every one of them curses me.”

a) Jeremiah offers the following facts of his life
i) He has never practised usury.
ii) He has never lent anyone money to gain an interest.
b) Yet, so many curse him.
i) They spoke ill against him.
ii) They are like our modern day “trolls”.
