"See the word of the LORD!"

Text: Jeremiah 2:31

THE WORD OF THE LORD

One of the most precious blessings Israel could ever have, would be the Word of the Lord! Yet, this glorious gift was taken for granted, set aside and even rudely rejected!

“O generation, see the word of the LORD!
Have I been a wilderness to Israel,
Or a land of darkness?
Why do My people say, ‘We are lords;
We will come no more to You’?”
Jeremiah 2:31

1. “O generation”

a) How long is one generation?
i) One modern-day study suggests 25 years.
ii) Other modern-day studies suggest between 28-31 years.
b) In the past, one generation was much longer.
c) A call to the generation in the days of the prophet Jeremiah.
i) Addressing the people living in his day and age.
ii) This was a call from the LORD.

2. “See the word of the LORD”

a) Normally one would say “Hear the word of the LORD”.
i) It would then be a call to hear the word of God proclaimed or prophesied.
ii) The challenge is to hear and to give heed.
b) In this instance, it is a call to “see the word of the LORD”.
i) The word of God had been proclaimed or prophesied.
ii) The word had also been fulfilled.
iii) That was evident and could be seen with the eye literally.
c) The word of God was not merely “theory”.

All that God had graciously promised had been wonderfully fulfilled!

3. “Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of darkness?”

a) Had God failed to keep His promise to bless?
b) God had brought Israel into a land of milk and honey as He had promised!
c) Was the land of Israel a wilderness or a land of darkness? Evidently, No!
d) God had shown His people nothing but His goodness and His blessings.

4. “Why do My people say, ‘We are lords; we will come no more to You’?”

a) The response of the people was astonishing!
i) They proclaimed themselves “lords”.
ii) They did not need to come to God as humble servants.
iii) Pride had filled their hearts.
b) They had spurned the LORD.
i) They refused to come to the LORD in grateful worship.
ii) They had no need of Him for they felt rich and powerful.
