"Coniah a despised, broken idol"

Text: Jeremiah 22:28

A DREADFUL PRONOUNCEMENT

Coniah (Jehoiachin) ascended the throne when he was just 18 years old (2 Kings 24:8). His actual reign was only 3 months before he was captured and sent into exile by Nebuchadnezzar (2 Kings 24:8-12).

“Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol—
A vessel in which is no pleasure?
Why are they cast out, he and his descendants,
And cast into a land which they do not know?
O earth, earth, earth,
Hear the word of the LORD!
Thus says the LORD:
‘Write this man down as childless,
A man who shall not prosper in his days;
For none of his descendants shall prosper,
Sitting on the throne of David,
And ruling anymore in Judah.'”
Jeremiah 22:28-30

1. “Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol—
A vessel in which is no pleasure?
Why are they cast out, he and his descendants,
And cast into a land which they do not know?”

a) Coniah described candidly:

i) Despised

ii) As useless as a broken idol.

iii) A vessel in which there is no pleasure.

b) Cast out into Babylon:

i) Coniah was exiled to Babylon.

ii) He and his descendants.

2. “O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD!”

a) This was a lesson for the whole earth to learn from.

b) This lesson was a word from the Lord.

c) Judah had to learn this lesson the hard way.

3. “Thus says the LORD: ‘Write this man down as childless, a man who shall not prosper in his days; for none of his descendants shall prosper, sitting on the throne of David, and ruling anymore in Judah.'”

a) Childless

i) Many kings had wives and concubines.

ii) All hoped that they would have heirs to succeed them.

iii) Coniah would have no offspring!

b) The descendants

i) A general term to describe members of the royal family.

ii) They would not prosper.

c) None of them would sit on the throne of David.

d) None of them would rule in Judah anymore.

e) The Kingdom of Judah was coming to an end.

f) Jehoiachin (Coniah) would be the penultimate king of Judah.
