"I will gather the remnant of My flock"

Text: Jeremiah 23:3

A GREAT CONTRAST

The LORD’s actions were a direct contrast to that of the false and wicked shepherds of Israel. He would fulfil His task as the true and great Shepherd of Israel.

“‘But I will gather the remnant of My flock
out of all countries where I have driven them,
and bring them back to their folds;
and they shall be fruitful and increase.
I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them;
and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed,
nor shall they be lacking,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 23:3-4

1. God as Shepherd

a) This was an imagery wonderfully captured by the Psalmist David (Psalm 23).

b) He was described as shepherding His people by the hand of Moses and Aaron (Psalm 77:20).

c) The Lord was described as the Shepherd of Israel (Psalm 80:1).

2. “But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.”

a) Gathering the remnant of the flock:

i) God will gather them as His flock.

ii) From all the countries they had been driven into.

b) “Folds”

i) A fold was a safe resting place for the flock.

ii) Many safe havens would be created to care for the returning flock.

c) “Increase”

i) God will bless them once again.

ii) His people would be fruitful.

iii) They will increase.

3. “‘I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,’ says the LORD.”

a) Shepherds

i) God would give them good shepherds.

ii) David was described as a good shepherd (Psalm 78:70-72).

b) Good shepherds

i) They will feed the flock.

ii) The sheep need not be fearful anymore.

iii) They would not be in dismay.

iv) They would not be lacking.

c) This was a wonderful promise given by the LORD.
