Jeremiah
"And they shall dwell in their own land"
Text: Jeremiah 23:8
COMMON SAYINGS
Common sayings may be drawn from significant historical events. One major historical event was when the LORD delivered Israel from Egypt. That event was incorporated into common sayings.
“‘Therefore, behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD,
‘that they shall no longer say, ‘As the LORD lives
who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,’
But, ‘As the LORD lives who brought up and led
the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country
and from all the countries where I had driven them.’
And they shall dwell in their own land.'”
Jeremiah 23:7-8
1. “‘Therefore, behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD”
a) This word came from the LORD.
b) He was making reference to a future event.
i) The immediate future was the destruction of the nation of Judah.
ii) This was an event that transcended that fateful time.
2. “That they shall no longer say, ‘As the LORD lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt'”
a) The common existing saying:
i) “As the LORD lives”
ii) “Who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt”
b) This saying marked one of the most significant historical events.
i) Living in Egypt was not something people remembered with joy.
ii) Leaving Egypt was something that was never to be forgotten.
3. “But, ‘As the LORD lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them'”
a) This was a significant major event.
b) There would be a time when Israel would be exiled.
i) They would be sent into “the north country”.
This was a reference to the country of the Babylonians.
ii) “From all the countries where I had driven them”
The Babylonian Empire was vast!
There were many other countries to which the Lord had sent Israel.
4. The New common saying
a) Israel would make reference to how the Lord had brought them
out of the Babylon and other foreign countries.
b) The Exile would not last forever. God would bring them back!
5. “And they shall dwell in their own land”
a) This was a veiled prophecy of the defeat of the Babylonian empire.
b) Israel would return to “their own land”.
c) This would be the new significant landmark event in the near but not
immediate future.
