"You will surely die!"

Text: Jeremiah 26:8

A STRONG REACTION

Jeremiah’s message from the Lord produced a strong reaction from those who did not truly believe in God. They may be there at the Temple, but mere attendance does not necessarily suggest true faith in the LORD!

“So the priests and the prophets and all the people
heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.
Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people,
that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying,
‘You will surely die! Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying,
‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate,
without an inhabitant’?’
And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.”
Jeremiah 26:7-9

JEREMIAH’S MESSAGE

1. His message was not new at all.

2. He had proclaimed words of warning of impending doom against Jerusalem many times (Jeremiah 7:14-15; 9:8-9 etc).

3. The LORD had given him these messages!

4. He had proven himself to be a faithful prophet of God, in contrast to the wicked priests and false prophets (Jeremiah 23:9-17).
