Day 354

"I will put My law in their minds"

Text: Jeremiah 31:33

IN THE NEW COVENANT

There will be a number of features that would differ from the old Sinaitic covenant. But there were also features that would remain unchanged.

“But this is the covenant that I will make
with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD:
I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts;
and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”
Jeremiah 31:33

1. “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,
says the LORD”

a) The concept of a “covenant” remains unchanged.

b) The old covenant had to do with Israel; the new covenant continues to be given to Israel.

2. “I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts”

a) This does not mean that God did not do this in the old covenant.

b) This special work of God is something that He has always delighted to do.

c) The meaning here:

i) God will continue to put His law in the mind.

ii) He will continue to write on the heart.

iii) This aspect of God’s work will not change.

d) A subtle challenge:

i) To be moved by what God has declared.

ii) To desire that God would continue to write on our hearts and minds.

iii) To determine that His glorious work would not be in vain this time round.

3. “And I will be their God, and they shall be My people”

a) The LORD will continue to be their God.

b) He will continue to regard errant Israel to be His people.
4. God’s focus in the New Covenant

a) This would be enacted by the Lord Jesus Christ.

b) He is Himself the New Covenant.

c) He will fulfil this prophecy when He comes to earth (Matthew 26:26-28).
