Jeremiah
"Is there anything too hard for Me?"
Text: Jeremiah 32:27
GOD’S ANSWER TO JEREMIAH I
As much as Jeremiah took pains to speak to God at length in prayer, the LORD replied to Jeremiah in a detailed answer.
“Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
‘Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh.
Is there anything too hard for Me?
Therefore thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans,
into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it.
And the Chaldeans who fight against this city
shall come and set fire to this city and burn it,
with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal
and poured out drink offerings to other gods,
to provoke Me to anger.””
Jeremiah 32:26-29
1. “Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying”
a) The LORD had heard the prayer of Jeremiah.
b) He would also give him a detailed answer.
2. “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”
a) God’s Declaration:
i) He is indeed the LORD.
ii) He is the God of all flesh too (Israel and all Gentiles).
b) Was there anything too hard for the LORD?
i) God knew the heart of Jeremiah.
ii) He could not fully comprehend what God can do!
iii) Theoretically, Jeremiah had declared a good understanding of his knowledge of God.
iv) But he could not fully grasp why God had instructed him to buy the field at Anathoth.
It seemed to be a waste of money!
3. “Therefore thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it'”
a) God reaffirms that He will give the city of Jerusalem to the Chaldeans.
b) Specifically, He will give the city into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
4. “And the Chaldeans who fight against this city
shall come and set fire to this city and burn it,
with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal
and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger”
a) What God was saying to Jeremiah was not new information at all.
b) He was reaffirming what He had already said to Jeremiah.
i) The Chaldeans will fight against Jerusalem.
ii) They will conquer the city.
iii) They will set the city on fire and burn it to the ground.
c) Special reference was made to the houses that worshipped Baal.
i) Houses in the early days had flat roofs.
ii) Many in Jerusalem had become Baal worshippers.
iii) They offered incense to the deities they worshipped.
iv) They worshipped other gods with gay abandon!
d) God’s judgment would be meted out against Jerusalem and its inhabitants.
i) The “holy city” had become unholy.
ii) The people had rejected the LORD in favour of Baal and other deities.
iii) The people had believed that the gods they worshipped would prosper them and bless them!
iv) Could these gods protect them from the might of the Chaldeans?
