Jeremiah
"I will perform that good thing which I have promised"
Text: Jeremiah 33:14
THE MESSIANIC ELEMENT
The LORD had more than the Return of His people to Judah in mind. He would be the ruler of His people.
“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD,
‘that I will perform that good thing which I have promised
to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah:
‘In those days and at that time
I will cause to grow up to David
A Branch of righteousness;
He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In those days Judah will be saved,
And Jerusalem will dwell safely.
And this is the name by which she will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.””
Jeremiah 33:14-16
1. “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah'”
a) What the LORD was revealing had to do with:
i) The distant future.
ii) It had to do with the Messianic Ruler sent from God.
b) This was a promise given:
i) To the house of Israel.
ii) To the house of Judah.
iii) It was indeed “a good thing”.
2. “In those days and at that time
I will cause to grow up to David
A Branch of righteousness;
He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth”
a) God would cause this to happen.
b) The Messiah was in mind.
i) He would come from the line of David.
ii) He may be called “A Branch of righteousness”.
iii) He is called “a Branch” in deep humility.
c) His work is to execute judgment and righteousness:
i) Over the house of Israel.
ii) Over the house of Judah.
iii) Over the whole earth!
3. “In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell safely.
And this is the name by which she will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”
a) God will protect Judah in His salvation.
b) Jerusalem need not fear war but will dwell safely.
c) The new name for Jerusalem is remarkable.
“THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”
i) Jerusalem would be linked with the name of the LORD.
ii) And as the LORD is righteous, so shall the city be.
iii) This “good thing” will be fulfilled by the LORD
through His Anointed One, the Messiah.
