Jeremiah
"If you can break My covenant with the day"
Text: Jeremiah 33:20
AN UNBREAKABLE COVENANT
The New Covenant that God would give and establish through the Messiah was an unbreakable one. The LORD drew strong analogies to reinforce what He meant.
“And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD:
‘If you can break My covenant with the day
and My covenant with the night,
so that there will not be day and night in their season,
then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant,
so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne,
and with the Levites, the priests, My ministers.
As the host of heaven cannot be numbered,
nor the sand of the sea measured,
so will I multiply the descendants of David My servant
and the Levites who minister to Me.””
Jeremiah 33:19-22
1. “And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD: ‘If you can break My covenant with the day
and My covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season””
a) Two analogies were drawn.
b) The subject is the same: God’s covenant.
i) God has a Covenant with the Day.
ii) He also has a Covenant with the Night.
iii) Both cannot be broken by anyone.
c) In the same way, God’s New Covenant cannot be broken.
2. “Then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant, so that he shall not have
a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, My ministers”
a) Another way of stating that the New Covenant cannot be broken.
b) If anyone can break God’s Covenant with the Day and Night,
then he can break His Covenant with David,
3. The Covenant here is actually the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31)
a) In this New Covenant, a number of features were mentioned.
b) These include:
i) The Davidic Kingdom
ii) Levites
iii) Priests
iv) They were called “My ministers” (servants).
c) The Lord Jesus established the New Covenant.
i) He was the Son of David.
ii) He appointed His ministers (Disciples who became apostles).
4. “As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured,
so will I multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me”
a) The descendants of David My servant.
i) These are more spiritual descendants than biological ones.
ii) Levites are simply those who serve the Lord in any humble ministry.
b) The number of ministers for the Lord.
i) They are truly myriads.
ii) The Lord will not lack servants to minister for Him.
