Jeremiah
"I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets"
Text: Jeremiah 35:15
SENDING OF PROPHETS
The LORD sent many prophets to both Israel and Judah. Each prophet was sent with messages from God. However, these prophetic messages were not appreciated nor heeded.
“I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets,
rising up early and sending them, saying,
‘Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings,
and do not go after other gods to serve them;
then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’
But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me.
Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed
the commandment of their father, which he commanded them,
but this people has not obeyed Me.”
Jeremiah 35:15-16
1. “I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets,
rising up early and sending them, saying,
‘Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings,
and do not go after other gods to serve them;
then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’
But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me”
a) It was the LORD who sent the prophets.
b) They were good and faithful servants of God.
c) The phrase, “rising up early and sending them”.
i) This was an idiomatic expression.
ii) It describes a good and faithful master who rises early.
iii) He speaks to his servants and assigns them work for the day.
d) The first part of the common theme of all the messages of the prophets:
i) “Turn now everyone from his evil way”
ii) “Amend your doings”
iii) “And do not go after other gods to serve them”
e) The second part of the common theme of all the messages of the prophets:
i) “Then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers”
ii) This was a promise that the LORD would be happy to fulfil.
f) The sad reality was that both Israel and Judah refused:
i) To give heed.
ii) To obey.
2. “Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed
the commandment of their father, which he commanded them,
but this people has not obeyed Me”
a) The sons of Jonadab were once again mentioned.
i) They had obeyed their earthly father.
ii) They would have obeyed God, their heavenly Father.
b) The children of Israel
i) They were nothing like the Rechabites.
ii) They were stubborn and rebellious.
iii) They refused to hear the prophets of God.
iv) They refused to repent from their wicked ways.
