"The whole land shall be desolate"

Text: Jeremiah 4:27

GOD’S RESPONSE TO JEREMIAH

God’s response to Jeremiah was sobering. Jeremiah had seen correctly. The whole land would be devastated!

“For thus says the LORD:
‘The whole land shall be desolate;
Yet I will not make a full end.
For this shall the earth mourn,
And the heavens above be black,
Because I have spoken.
I have purposed and will not relent,
Nor will I turn back from it.
The whole city shall flee from the noise of the horsemen and bowmen.
They shall go into thickets and climb up on the rocks.
Every city shall be forsaken,
And not a man shall dwell in it.'”
Jeremiah 4:27-29

1. “For thus says the LORD: ‘The whole land shall be desolate'”

a) Jeremiah’s prophetic vision was correct.
b) The whole land would become desolate indeed!

2. “Yet I will not make a full end.”

a) This was the small glimmer of hope God gave.
b) The devastation will not be “the full end!”
i) It would take faith to believe in the future.
ii) It would take hope and strength to cling to this word of God.

3. “For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black”

a) It will be a time of deep mourning for Judah.
b) The heavens will wear black in sympathy.

4. “Because I have spoken. I have purposed and will not relent, nor will I turn back from it.”

a) This constitutes the decree or will of God.
b) The following elements are inviolable once God had spoken.
i) This was what God had purposed.
ii) He will not relent.
iii) He will not turn back from seeing this carried out.

5. “The whole city shall flee from the noise of the horsemen and bowmen. They shall go into thickets and climb up on the rocks. Every city shall be forsaken, and not a man shall dwell in it.”

a) The whole city
Most likely, a reference to Jerusalem (The capital of Judah).
b) The noise of the enemy horsemen and bowmen.
i) All will flee.
ii) The city would be forsaken.
iii) No one would dwell in the city.
iv) People will find shelter anywhere.
v) They would even try and hide in a thicket.
vi) Or to climb out of harm’s way.
vii) The scenario is one of bedlam!
