Jeremiah
"Against Moab"
Text: Jeremiah 48:1
ANOTHER COUNTRY JUDGED
The LORD made judgments against Egypt and Philistia. He now spoke against Moab. This nation had been a hostile enemy of Israel from the days of Moses!
“Against Moab.
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘Woe to Nebo!
For it is plundered,
Kirjathaim is shamed and taken;
The high stronghold is shamed and dismayed—
No more praise of Moab.
In Heshbon they have devised evil against her:
‘Come, and let us cut her off as a nation.’
You also shall be cut down, O Madmen!
The sword shall pursue you'”
Jeremiah 48:1-2
1. “Against Moab. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘Woe to Nebo! For it is plundered, Kirjathaim is shamed and taken;
the high stronghold is shamed and dismayed'”
a) Nebo is the name of a mountain peak in Moab.
b) From Mount Nebo, Moses saw the land of Canaan.
c) Kirjathaim was actually a pair or cities close to each other.
d) What would be their fate?
i) Nebo would be defeated and plundered.
ii) Kirjathaim had famous strongholds.
iii) But these two cities would also be shamed and dismayed
because they would be soundly defeated!
e) These were major cities of Moab.
i) But they would all be overcome!
ii) If Egypt and Philistia could be conquered, how would Moab be victorious?
2. “No more praise of Moab. In Heshbon they have devised evil against her:
‘Come, and let us cut her off as a nation.’ You also shall be cut down, O Madmen!
The sword shall pursue you”
a) Heshbon was another major city of Moab.
b) It was conquered and this land was assigned to Reuben.
c) Moab later took back the city and made it their own.
d) But Moab was doomed to be destroyed.
i) The plot to destroy the whole of Moab was made in Heshbon itself.
ii) The Moabites were called “mad men”.
e) In the North, the cities of Nebo and Kirjathaim would be captured.
f) In the South, Heshbon would also be defeated.
g) The sword would pursue them from the North to the South.
