"The horn of Moab is cut off"

Text: Jeremiah 48:25

THE JUDGMENT OF THE LORD

The judgment against Moab was pronounced by the LORD through the prophet Jeremiah. Some of the major cities were named.

“‘And judgment has come on the plain country:
On Holon and Jahzah and Mephaath,
On Dibon and Nebo and Beth Diblathaim,
On Kirjathaim and Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,
On Kerioth and Bozrah,
On all the cities of the land of Moab,
Far or near.
The horn of Moab is cut off,
And his arm is broken,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 48:21-25

1. Some of the cities were located in the plains

a) Holon

b) Jahzah

c) Mephaath

d) Little is known of these cities, apart from noting that these cities
were found in the plains.

2. The capital Dibon would not be spared.

3. Two other cities close by would also perish,

a) Nebo (named after the famous Mount Nebo that overlooked Israel)

b) Beth Diblathaim

4. Some cities were “far or near” the capital city.

a) But these cities too would be destroyed.

b) The cities were named because these made up the bulk of the strength of Moab.

c) But little is known about these cities (Jeremiah 48:23-24).

5. “‘The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken,’ says the LORD”

a) The word “horn” represented power.

b) Moab may be compared to a powerful beast with a mighty horn.

c) But if the horn is cut off, the strength and might of the beast is gone.

d) In the same manner:

i) The power of Moab lay in the cities.

ii) But when the cities are destroyed, the power of Moab is shorn.

iii) The power of Moab’s arm is broken, depicting the weakness of the nation.
