"An alarm of war in Rabbah of the Ammonites"

Text: Jeremiah 49:2

THE CHIEF CITY OF THE AMMONITES

Rabbah was the chief city of the Ammonites. This was the battle that David fought with Joab (2 Samuel 12:26-31). But Rabbah still managed to survive over the years until this judgment was pronounced against it by the LORD.

“‘Therefore behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD,
‘That I will cause to be heard an alarm of war
In Rabbah of the Ammonites;
It shall be a desolate mound,
And her villages shall be burned with fire.
Then Israel shall take possession of his inheritance,’
says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 49:2

1. “‘Therefore behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD,
‘That I will cause to be heard an alarm of war in Rabbah of the Ammonites'”

a) Rabbah was called “a royal city” of the Ammonites (2 Samuel 12:26).

b) It was once defeated by King David.

c) The LORD warned of another war against the Ammonites.

d) This time, the enemies would be the Ammonites.

2. “It shall be a desolate mound, and her villages shall be burned with fire”

a) Ammon would become little more than a desolate mound.

i) Ammon, like Moab, had high hills.

ii) But it would only become “a desolate mound”.

b) Her villages would be burned to the ground.

i) Ammon, like Moab, was actually wealthy.

ii) But the wealth would all disappear when the villages are destroyed by fire.

3. “‘Then Israel shall take possession of his inheritance,’ says the LORD”

a) Ammon was a sovereign state once.

b) In the battle against Israel, David conquered Ammon.

c) Then Ammon grew stronger while Israel became weaker.

d) Ammon was once again an independent nation in the days
when Israel and Judah were separate countries.

e) The prophecy from Jeremiah was that Israel would one day possess Ammon,
as in the days of King David.
