Jeremiah
"Bozrah shall become a desolation"
Text: Jeremiah 49:13
THE JUDGMENT OF THE LORD ON BOZRAH
The Judgment of the LORD against Ammon was meant to cover every city, whether they were great or small. Some citadels like Bozrah believed that it would be able to hold up against the Babylonians. This was a misperception!
“For thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, those whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunk.
And are you the one who will altogether go unpunished?
You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink of it.
For I have sworn by Myself,’ says the LORD,
‘that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse.
And all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.'”
Jeremiah 49:12-13
1. “For thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, those whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunk.
And are you the one who will altogether go unpunished?
You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink of it'”
a) In ancient days, a cup was given to a prisoner to drink.
i) This was a cup of wine mixed with poison.
ii) The results are always fatal.
b) There were those who thought that they can bypass the cup of judgment.
i) They were wrong.
ii) They too were made to drink and they were dead.
c) There were some who believed that they can escape judgment from God.
i) They were told that they are wrong.
ii) The wicked, no matter how mighty they are, will not escape punishment.
2. “‘For I have sworn by Myself,’ says the LORD, ‘that Bozrah shall become a desolation,
a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be perpetual wastes'”
a) The LORD had sworn by Himself.
b) There was specific reference to Bozrah which was a fortified city.
c) The people in Bozrah and its surrounding towns believed
they would not be touched by God’s judgment.
d) They were so wrong!
e) Bozrah would become:
i) A desolation.
ii) A reproach.
iii) A waste.
iv) And a curse.
f) The surrounding cities of Bozrah.
i) They would become “perpetual wastes!”
ii) They would become ghost towns!
