"I have heard a message from the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 49:14

A MESSAGE FROM THE LORD

This was a sobering message indeed! The LORD revealed the plan to attack and to destroy Edom.

“I have heard a message from the LORD,
And an ambassador has been sent to the nations:
Gather together, come against her,
And rise up to battle!
‘For indeed, I will make you small among nations,
Despised among men.
Your fierceness has deceived you,
The pride of your heart,
O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
Who hold the height of the hill!
Though you make your nest as high as the eagle,
I will bring you down from there,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 49:14-16

1. “I have heard a message from the LORD, and an ambassador has been sent to the nations:
‘Gather together, come against her, and rise up to battle'”

a) This word was described as a message from the LORD.

b) An ambassador:

i) There is a human element.

ii) The Babylonians were gathering a mighty army made up of soldiers
from their allies.

c) There was a spiritual element.
God was there to cause allies to gather together to battle Edom.

d) The word was direct and straightforward.

i) The allies were to gather together against Edom.

ii) They were to wage war against Edom.

2. “For indeed, I will make you small among nations, despised among men”

a) The end result was made known.

b) Edom’s fate was sealed:

i) It would be nothing more than a small nation.

ii) It would become a despised country.

3. “Your fierceness has deceived you, the pride of your heart,
O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill”

a) The underlying problems were addressed.

i) The fierce spirit of Edom was well-known.

ii) The other problem was the pride of their heart.

b) Edom’s geographical location.

i) They dwelt in the hills.

ii) They felt as if they were like eagles whose nests were in high places.

iii) As eagles’ nests were seldom attacked by hunters,
so Edom felt very secure because they did not live in the plains and valleys.

4. “‘Though you make your nest as high as the eagle,
I will bring you down from there,’ says the LORD”

a) They were deceived by their arrogant assumption.

b) The LORD can and will bring them down from the high hills.

c) Edom would be destroyed by the Babylonians and their allies.
