Jeremiah
Day
Day 93

"Why does the LORD our God do all these things to us?"

Text: Jeremiah 5:19

WHEN PEOPLE SEEK AN ANSWER

There is nothing wrong with asking questions. It is normal to raise questions. The Lord has answers to all questions that may be raised!

“‘Nevertheless in those days,’ says the LORD,
‘I will not make a complete end of you.
And it will be when you say,
‘Why does the LORD our God do all these things to us?’
then you shall answer them,
‘Just as you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land,
so you shall serve aliens in a land that is not yours.””
Jeremiah 5:18-19

1. “‘Nevertheless in those days,’ says the LORD, ‘I will not make a complete end of you.'”

a) “In those days”
i) This is a reference to the days of invasion by the Babylonians.
ii) The invaders would wreak great devastation to the land.
b) “Not make a complete end”
i) This was first mentioned in Jeremiah 4:27.
ii) This promise was repeated in Jeremiah 5:10.
iii) It is repeated again here in Jeremiah 5:18.
c) Significance of repetition
i) To give assurance.
ii) To give comfort.
iii) To give hope for the future.

2. “And it will be when you say, ‘Why does the LORD our God do all these things to us?'”

a) This must first be a sincere and humble question.
b) It must not be one that expresses defiance.

3. “Then you shall answer them, ‘Just as you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve aliens in a land that is not yours.'”

a) God’s answer
i) It was consistent.
ii) He has stated this a number of times already in the earlier chapters of the Book of Jeremiah.
b) Two reasons were highlighted
i) Israel/ Judah had forsaken God shamefully.
ii) Both nations had served foreign gods.
c) The chastisement from the Lord
i) They seemed to be enamoured of aliens and their gods.
ii) They will be delivered to an alien land.
iii) There they will worship and serve their idols as they have wished!
d) The Judgment and punishment from God
i) These were not without reason.
ii) These were not meted out without mercy.
iii) There would be a remnant preserved.
