"But these speak evil of whatever they do not know..."

A TOTAL CONTRAST

Jude’s comments about the false teachers is important to note. Their brashness and arrogance irked him.

“But these speak evil of whatever they do not know;
and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts,
in these things they corrupt themselves.”

Jude 10

1. “But these speak evil of whatever they do not know”

a) “Whatever they do not know”

i) They do not know of the power of angelic beings.

ii) Their understanding seems to be very limited.

iii) But their ignorance did not stop them from making comments.

b) “These speak evil”

i) The word “speak evil” may be translated “blasphemous words”.

ii) They did not display the same attitude and approach as Michael the archangel.

iii) They spoke evil of things they do not know fully.

2. “Whatever they know naturally”

a) Their approach is based on what they know naturally.

b) They probably did not have a high regard for human beings.

c) They adopted the same attitude towards angelic beings.

3. “Like brute beasts”

a) Jude compared them to brute beasts.

b) These animals merely react.

c) They do not think!

4. “In these things they corrupt themselves”

a) There would of course be consequences for their actions.

b) The NKJV text translated the consequences as “self-corrupting”.

c) This is certainly possible.

d) However, there is another way of translating the text.

e) It could also be translated, “they ruined (destroyed) themselves” as a result of their arrogant approach. Jude wanted to warn his readers of the deadly consequence of being caught up with false teachings.
