"To those who are called..."

THE ADDRESSEES

Jude had an interesting way of addressing fellow-believers. He pulled in three features that identify true believers.

“To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father,
and preserved in Jesus Christ.”

Jude 1

1. A different perspective

a) Jude’s approach is taken from God’s perspective.

b) He sees things from the divine perspective.

2. The called

a) The believer is reminded that he has been called by God.

b) Basic features of our calling: –

i) A calling to salvation

ii) A calling to service

iii) A calling to follow the Lord Jesus

c) “Sanctified”

i) God’s work of sanctification is to be noted.

ii) He declares us holy.

iii) He makes us holy.

iv) Our response is to be holy (sanctified).

d) “And preserved in Jesus Christ”

i) Thank God for this aspect of our salvation.

ii) This teaches us about eternal security of our salvation.

iii) Salvation is a work that is done by the Lord.

iv) It will also be completed by the Lord.

e) “The beloved”

i) In another Greek version the word “sanctified” was given an alternative reading.

ii) That word was “the beloved”.

iii) There is no question that we are indeed beloved of God and sanctified as well.
