Luke 22 : 35-38 "EVERY DETAIL LOOKED INTO"
Day 288 – Luke 22
Text: Luke 22 : 35-38
EVERY DETAIL LOOKED INTO
It is remarkable how Jesus looked into every detail. He had planned for the Last Supper with His Disciples. They need not have worried that this detail was not looked into (Luke 22).
There were a number of loose ends that needed attention. Each and every little detail was looked into. The Lord’s Supper was introduced. The betrayer was announced and identified. He had taught His Disciples one more lesson on servant-leadership, by washing their feet. He had also spoken to them about how they will all be stumbled shortly.
There was one more detail that He needed to address, after which He would no longer be in contact with His Disciples till after His resurrection. As we take time to review and reflect, we must surely stand amazed at the way Jesus looked into every little detail.
LOOKING BACK
Jesus had spoken to His Disciples about how they would be stumbled, but that only drew a response of denial. They could not imagine how they could be scattered. Were they not fiercely loyal to their Master? Had they not given up everything to follow Him? How could Jesus speak about their being scattered?
Yet another new topic was addressed. Jesus asked them to recall how He would send them on short Mission trips.
“When I sent you without money bag,
knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
Luke 22:35
Let’s recall how Jesus sent them on one Mission. This will refresh our memory and help us understand this new word that Jesus was going to speak to His Disciples.
“Take nothing for the journey,
neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money:
and do not have two tunics apiece…”
Luke 9:3
Jesus had given similar instructions to another group of Disciples. To the group of seventy, Jesus gave similar instructions.
“Carry neither money bag, knapsack , nor sandals”
Luke 10:4
Did they lack anything when they went out preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God? The Disciples recalled that mission trip and affirmed that Jesus was correct. They did not lack anything at all. When they went out to preach, they had so much success. All their needs were fully met!
DRASTIC CHANGES TO BE EXPECTED
The Disciples must have been surprised when they heard what Jesus said next. Let us ponder the next word of advice Jesus gave His Disciples.
“But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it,
and likewise a knapsack;
and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.”
Luke 22:36
What did Jesus mean? Why did He say such words? Unfortunately, the Disciples did not probe and ask their Teacher what He meant.
Jesus went on with His last word of advice to his Disciples.
“For I say to you that this which is written
must still be accomplished in Me.
‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’
For the things concerning Me have an end. ” Luke 22:37
Did the Disciples fully understand what Jesus said? Apparently not! Let us look at how they responded.
“So they said,
‘Lord, look, here are two swords.’ “
Luke 22:38
How Jesus must have sighed when he heard these words. He realized that His Disciples had not fully comprehended what He meant. He spoke cryptically these words,
“It is enough.”
Luke 22:38
What did Jesus mean when He said, “It is enough”? The Disciples had not asked Jesus what He meant when He spoke about carrying a money bag, a knapsack and swords. They had failed to understand Him then.
They had also failed to ask Him what He meant when He spoke about being numbered with the transgressors. This was a prophetic utterance spoken by Isaiah in his famous chapter detailing the suffering of the Messiah (Cf. Isaiah 53).
Jesus was not going to engage His Disciples on the discussion of the availability of the two swords they had among them. That was not what He meant, though He did speak about selling their garments to purchase swords.
Enough discussion! Enough talk! The Disciples had not shown any positive signs of deeper comprehension. The hour of His death had arrived. All things concerning Him must come to an end. And that end included being numbered with transgressors. In Jesus’ mind the Word of God from the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled. He had tried His best to warn the Disciples that He would no longer be able to take care of them. They must learn how to fend for themselves, as best they can. The mention of things like the knapsack and sword were His way of telling them that they must take care of themselves. How tenderly Jesus loved His Disciples. But they failed to fully understand Him.
