Text: Luke 24:44-53

BIBLIOLOGY – THE DOCTRINE OF THE SCRIPTURES

Surely, one of the most significant doctrines taught by the Lord Jesus Christ was His teaching concerning the Scriptures. Even as Jesus was ending His sojourn on earth, He sought to help His Disciples to have a deeper appreciation of the doctrine of the Scriptures. Jesus’ concept of Bibliology was truly profound. Among other things, we may observe the following things He highlighted to His Disciples.

“ALL THINGS MUST BE FULFILLED” Luke 24:44

What is the first word that comes to your mind when you think about the Scriptures? If you were a disciple and you asked Jesus that question, He might say these words to you.

“All things must be fulfilled which were written
in the Law of Moses, and the Prophets,
and the Psalms…”
Luke 24:44

The idea of fulfillment of the Scriptures was prominent in the mind of the Lord Jesus. It certainly was a permanent idea that He sought to impress upon His Disciples. Let us consider the following statements that He made concerning the idea of the fulfillment of the Scriptures.

Jesus saw Himself fulfilling the Scriptures. Fulfilment of the prophetic Scriptures was in His mind as He began His public ministry. He read from the Book of Isaiah at a synagogue in Nazareth, and then went on to say.

“Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:21

He sought always to allay the fears of those who did not know Him well, as He began to have a powerful public ministry teaching the Word of God.

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”
Matthew 5:17

Again and again, Jesus sought to drum this word “fulfillment” into the heads and hearts of His Disciples. A good knowledge of the Scriptures must include the concept of “fulfillment of the Scriptures”.

“And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles
until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
Luke 21:24

“With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover
with you before I suffer; for I say to you,
I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled
In the kingdom of God.”
Luke 22:15,16

Jesus’ understanding of the Scriptures was strong and powerful. It affected every aspect of His life and ministry! Isn’t that how the Scriptures were meant to affect us?

“WRITTEN IN THE LAW OF MOSES, AND THE PROPHETS, AND THE PSALMS…” Luke 24:44

When Jesus taught from the Scriptures, what did He have in mind? It is not without significance when we read that Jesus had a deep appreciation of the WRITTEN WORD of God. In Jesus’ mind, the Word of God was that which was written down by Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.

Jesus referred to the written word of God time and again. By so doing, He endorsed the written Scriptures that we call the Old Testament.

In His battle against Satan, Jesus quoted with tremendous understanding of the power and authority of the Written Word, the Scriptures.

“For it is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone,
But by every word of God…”
Luke 4:4 (Cf. Luke 4:8)

In His battle against His enemies, He would often cite the Scriptures,

“Have you not even read this,(ref. to the Scriptures)
what David when he was hungry,
he and those who were with him… “
Luke 6:3

“It is written,
My house is a house of prayer,
But you have made it a ‘den of thieves’. “
Luke 19:46

“Thus it is written,
and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer
and to rise from the dead the third day…”
Luke 24:46

What is your regard of the Written Word of God? Let us heed the word of exhortation the Apostle Paul gave to Timothy,

“Till I come, give attention to reading (of the Scriptures publicly),
to exhortation, to doctrine… Meditate on these things;
Give yourself entirely to them… ” 1 Timothy 4:13, 15
