"My name shall be great among the Gentiles"

Text: Malachi 1:11

THE GREAT NAME OF THE LORD

The name of a person is of immense value. It either redounds with honour, or it could bring great shame. The name of the LORD is sacred and it should have been regarded with sacredness and awe. Sadly, Israel dishonoured the LORD’s name.

“‘For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down,
My name shall be great among the Gentiles;
In every place incense shall be offered to My name,
And a pure offering;
For My name shall be great among the nations,’
Says the LORD of hosts.”
Malachi 1:11

1. “My name shall be great”

a) God’s name should be held in the highest regard.
b) His name should be honoured and held in esteem
i) From daybreak
ii) To sunset.

2. “Among the Gentiles”

a) Firstly, it should have been great among His people.
b) Secondly, it should have been just as great among the Gentiles.
c) Sadly, the Lord’s name was not honoured by Israel.
d) And if His people did not honour His name, why would the Gentiles honour it?

3. “In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering”

a) Incense was a symbol of prayer.
b) A pure offering should be given each time worship is offered to God.
c) This was clearly taught by Moses.
d) The priests and Levites knew this commandment (Leviticus 22:17-22).
e) There was clear teaching concerning incense offering too (Exodus 30:34-38).
f) These offerings were to be regarded as “most holy” (Exodus 30:36).

4. “My name shall be great among the nations”

a) The word “nations” is the same as “Gentiles”.
b) The name of the LORD was not well regarded because of Israel’s poor regard.
