Day 222 – Mark 10

“But beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” 2 Peter 3:8

THE ORIGINAL PLAN

Jesus spoke to the Pharisees of God’s original plan, which antedated the Law of Moses.

“But from the beginning of the creation,
God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh;
so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
MARK 10:6-9

Instead of advocating the law that permitted divorce, why would not the Pharisees encourage people to return to God’s original plan for marriage? The following thoughts may be highlighted:-

<h41. The concept of “one flesh”

a) God’s creation
God knew what He was doing when He created “male and female”. Instead of stressing the differences (and there could be many), one should consider the way in which one would complement the other.
b) God’s involvement
God did not merely create, He was also involved in joining two people as “one flesh” must be given due consideration. Divorce often does not consider well the role of God in marriage.

2. The process of becoming “one flesh”

a) Leaving father and mother
i) The individual must be mature enough to “leave father and mother”.
ii) The individual must be readied and able to form his own family unit.
b) Be joined to his wife
i) Marriage joins two people and makes them one.
ii) There must be mature commitment to develop the “one flesh” concept.
