THE PROPHETIC MINISTRY OF ZECHARIAH

Zechariah was one of the last few post-exilic prophets God sent to Israel. He was sent especially to help the governor Zerubbabel in his efforts to rebuild the temple of Jerusalem. The Book of Zechariah revealed some very precious words God gave to those who had returned to build the city of Jerusalem, after having been exiled for seventy years.

“Then the prophet Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo,
prophets, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah
and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel,
who was over them.”
EZRA 5:1

SPECIAL WORDS OF COMFORT CONCERNING JERUSALEM

To the discouraged returnees, God gave to Zechariah many wonderfully comforting words. The following were some of the promises proclaimed:

1. The Promise of mercy


“‘I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy,
My house shall be built in it’, says the LORD of hosts.”
ZECHARIAH 1:16

2. The Promise of comfort


“The LORD will again comfort Zion,
And will again choose Jerusalem.”
ZECHARIAH 1:17

3. The Promise of Exaltation of the City of Jerusalem


“Thus says the LORD:
‘I will return to Zion and dwell in the midst of Jerusalem,
Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth,
The Mountain of the LORD of hosts,
The Holy Mountain.'”
ZECHARIAH 8:3

THE GREATEST PROMISE OF ALL

The greatest gift that God promised Israel may well be found in the following text.


“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
ZECHARIAH 9:9

Jesus had this prophecy in mind when He prepared Himself to enter Jerusalem.
