Day 236 – Mark 11

“In which are some things hard to understand , which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.” 2 Peter 3:16b

VISITING JERUSALEM

From childhood, Jesus would make His way (with His parents) to Jerusalem. This was noted in the Gospel of Luke.

“His parents went to Jerusalem every year
at the Feast of the Passover.
And when He was twelve years old, they went up to
Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.”
LUKE 2:41-42

COMMANDMENT TO APPEAR BEFORE THE LORD

It was the Lord who gave clear commandments to Israel concerning these special holy Feasts.

“Three times a year all your males shall appear
before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses:
at the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
at the Feast of Weeks,
and at the Feast of Tabernacles;
and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed.
Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing
of the LORD which He has given you.”
DEUTERONOMY 16:16-17

NO ORDINARY VISIT TO JERUSALEM

Jesus had been warning His Disciples that soon His sufferings would commence, with specific reference to Jerusalem (Cf. Mark 10:33-34). As they neared the city, Mark began to carefully describe this last and most fateful visit to Jerusalem.

“Now when they drew near Jerusalem,
To Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives,
He sent two of His disciples:
And He said to them, ‘Go into the village opposite you,
And as soon as you have entered it, you will find a colt tied,
On which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it.
And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’
Say, ‘The Lord has need of it; and immediately
He will send it here.'”
MARK 11:1-3

1. At no other city had Jesus made such careful, pre-arranged plans.

2. In all other cities, Jesus would either send all His disciples out to preach.

3. Or He would move with all His Disciples into the city and then commence ministering to the multitudes.
